Have you ever thought about why men can freely and without shame walk around topless while the same is prohibited for women even though there's technically no difference between male and female chest? (Apart from estrogen influenced enlargement of tissue amongst women.)
I remember it bothered me since the young age, before I started wearing my bikini top; walking around the beach and seeing all those fat middle age men proudly showing off their big, disgusting tits, while their remarkably fitter and more petite wives hid theirs in their uncomfortable cold and wet bras. It seemed quite illogical, but soon I just gave in, accepted what they taught me: male nipples are fine, female are something shameful and sexual and shouldn't be shown in public.
However, not long ago I saw the video that brought me back to those doubts. Here it goes:

As you could have learned from the video, not so long ago neither men could go around topless. It brings us to conclusion that female nipples aren't something inappropriate by themselves, we made them that way, hiding them and creating cultural environment where the woman's body is objectified and fetishized on the regular basis. Now, the thing is not about all women going topless, it is about breaking the stigma about female nipples and their inadequacy in public spaces, media and generally in Western culture. Even in places where being topless is allowed (like some beaches), most of the women are afraid to take their tops off because of the fear of being categorized as certain types of women and lose respect in other areas of their lives. I hope you got the idea where the real problem is; it is not the alone legalization of women showing off their chest, but getting rid of the objectification of female body as such and prejudices that come along. It is about EQUALITY. It is about having the choice to go to the beach wearing just bikini bottoms and not be instantly labeled as a whore by both men and women around.
Free the Nipple is a film and an amazing equality movement which mission is to empower the women across the world and stand against female oppression and censorship. You can find out more clicking here or visiting the official age of the project that I linked before. |
